Work here is an attempt to engage some re-occurring
themes with new technologies. For the neck pieces, there
is a return to the sculptural and formal problem of continuous
chain linkage. The open spacing of the elements along with
the thinness of the connecting wire creates a floating array
of elements that hover in the defined space of the wreath.
The
bracelets, are made in a similar way, but instead of using
the chain link, these are made as open, woven structures.
The taught basket-like structure, with its openness and lightness,
is meant to simply and directly define the sculptural space
around the wrist. The flexibility is employed here to make
continuous, rhythmic structures that do not need a hinge or
catch. They are meant to simply stretch and return so as to
accommodate the wrist.
All
are assembled from multiple modular units and stainless steel
wire. The modular units for these were designed on the computer
with a CAD modeling program. Those forms were then “printed”
as solid forms. Some of the prints were used as a pattern
for making cast, sterling silver connecting units. Other printed
parts (translucent acrylic) were used directly in the final
jewelry objects. |
